Artist Gilbert Baker’s rainbow Gay Pride flag in the Castro’s Harvey Milk Plaza is officially a landmark thanks to a unanimous vote of approval by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

To mark the milestone, the Gilbert Baker Foundation plans to host a celebration on Friday, Sept. 13, to commemorate Mayor London Breed’s signing of the bill. The event will also include a flag-raising ceremony by the Castro Merchants Association, which maintains the 20-foot-by-30-foot and 100-foot pole installation.

“Gilbert Baker’s flags are in museums around the world,” Charles Beal, president of the Gilbert Baker Foundation, told the Chronicle. “We just sent one to the Toledo Art Museum, and we sent a second flag to the Obama Library. But flags are ephemeral, they can be put up one day and taken down the next. This is the only permanent Gilbert Baker installation in the world, and for that reason, we felt extra motivation to get it landmarked.”
