I'm on BART a lot from Oakland to the City, etc. With the installation of the new fare gates at West Oakland last December, the effect on the composition of the rider population for the better was obvious immediately. For years before I felt that BART was perhaps the only train/subway in the world making multiple scheduled stops in a loony-bin for pick-ups and drop-offs.
BART has made the historic purchase of brand-new fare gates to be installed systemwide as part of its latest effort to improve the customer experience and overhaul safety in the system. The new fare gates bring a new look and improved experience, offering state-of-the-art technology that will boost safety by reducing fare evasion, enhancing access for people in wheelchairs and those who bring bikes and strollers on BART, and optimizing the reliability and maintenance needs of the fare gates.

Project timeline:
The West Oakland pilot gates opened in December 2023.
By the end of February 2025, BART will have completed more than half our 50 stations.
Full deployment systemwide will be completed by the end of 2025.
Completed Stations
- West Oakland (work started the week of December 11, 2023, and was completed December 28, 2023)
- Civic Center (platform gate replaced April 2024, work on the concourse gates began in July 2024 and the entire station was completed August 29, 2024)
- Fruitvale (work began August 13, 2024, and was completed on August 21, 2024)
- Richmond (work started the week of September 3, 2024 and was completed on September 13, 2024)
- Oakland International Airport (work started the week of September 15, 2024 and was completed September 20, 2024)
