The Fairmont San Francisco kicked off the holidays in sweet style Saturday by unveiling its gingerbread house, an annual tradition blending baking and engineering that attracts thousands of spectators into the new year.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony featured a performance by the San Francisco Boys Chorus, photo ops with Santa Claus, and visits from representatives of Make-a-Wish Greater Bay Area, this year’s philanthropic partners of the gingerbread house.
The Nob Hill hotel’s culinary team, led by Executive Chef Chad Bayless, constructed the two-story marvel out of more than 8,000 gingerbread bricks and over a ton of icing and candy decor. The house stands larger than ever this year at 25 feet high, 35 feet wide and 11 feet deep, Fairmont spokesperson Michelle Heston told the Chronicle. Next to it in the lobby stands the Fairmont’s 23-foot-tall Christmas tree.
