NorthNorth Beach’s renowned Park Tavern on Washington Square is finally reopening on Friday, November 22, with a refreshed presence and decorated chef Jonathan Waxman in charge of the food. Back in 2012, Park Tavern was among the James Beard Award finalists for the Best New Restaurant in the country. It lived up to the hype for nearly a decade before an embattled post-pandemic reopening saw the contemporary dining scion close last December — less than a year after its return. But now, owner James Nicholas of Marlowe and the Cavalier promises to bring it back to its glory in partnership with Waxman, a Chez Panisse alum and Beard Award winner himself, whom he’s known for 20 years. And the chef’s menu seems very up to the task.

Diners can expect a riff on the roasted chicken with salsa verde that Waxman serves at his celebrated New York restaurant, Barbuto. “We have a new open fire broiler that makes the skin even crispier,” Waxman, who for now, will split time between SF and NY, tells Eater. “And it will always be on the menu.” Other staples will include Liberty Duck served with both a breast and confit leg alongside roasted apples with chiles and seasonal vegetables. Comfort classics like sand dabs or petrale sole will mark the fish offerings and in-season Steelhead figures to be a prominent fixture early on.

This classic S.F. Italian restaurant closed after 50 years. Now it’s back

North Beach Restaurant, which was, until its closure last year, a quintessential gathering place in its eponymous neighborhood, is ready to reopen.

Francesco Covucci, who owns nearby restaurants including Barbara Pinseria and Il Casaro Pizzeria, confirmed to the Chronicle that the restaurant will return on Dec. 3, at 1512 Stockton St., where it will continue to offer Italian dishes. He and his late business partner, Peter Fazio, acquired the restaurant earlier this year from longtime owners the Petroni family.

“The history has to continue,” Covucci said, “and we feel very privileged that the Petroni family gave us the privilege to keep the legacy going.”
