Where to find crusty pork buns, steamy dumplings and comforting parcels of sticky rice.

I can think of few better ways to catch up with family and friends on a weekend than around a lazy Susan, sending steamer baskets around and around while sipping endless cups of tea.
We’re spoiled here in the Bay Area, where the country’s oldest dim sum restaurant opened in San Francisco in 1920. From narrow Chinatown bakeries to opulent Peninsula emporiums with crystal chandeliers, there’s a dim sum spot for every occasion.
My colleague Cesar and I set some ground rules for ourselves as we attacked this list. Har gow, siu mai and char siu bao — sometimes steamed, sometimes baked with a crackly sugar lid — were our baseline orders. To that we added house specialties or whatever else caught our fancy on a given day. While we considered takeout-only spots, it wasn’t exactly a fair fight. Only one held its own amid the old school dim sum palaces and new wave hot spots. — MacKenzie Chung Fegan
