Kathy Fang, front right, and her father, Peter (back right), co-authored a cookbook that is as much an exploration of the beloved recipes at House of Nanking as it is a love letter to The City.
Tuesday marked the release of the newest addition to San Francisco’s collection of must-have cookbooks produced by its world-renowned culinary community.
House of Nanking Chef Kathy Fang and her father, Peter, co-authored “House of Nanking: Family Recipes From San Francisco’s Favorite Chinese Restaurant.” The cookbook is as much an exploration of beloved recipes as it is a love letter to San Francisco and its unique ability to make the dreams of a family such as the Fangs come to life.
The tome tells the story of San Francisco through food and the Fang family’s journey as immigrants and Chinatown residents. Certain parts of the book are presented in English and Cantonese, so children can cook alongside parents and grandparents the way Kathy did. Old family photos — including some with celebrity customers such as Keanu Reeves — are featured alongside personalized recipes that do as much storytelling as instructing.
House of Nanking cookbook values family ties, spirit of SF
