Much as I love the Rooftop Garden, it would be a lot better if it were free. Presumably the concert is.

SFMOMA’s Rooftop Radio events are set to take place in the Jean and James Douglas Family Sculpture Garden.

An outdoor concert series will turn the SFMOMA’s rooftop garden into a spirited showcase of Bay Area arts and culture this summer.

The museum will host musicians, DJs, and other artists in the Jean and James Douglas Family Sculpture Garden as part of the music series Rooftop Radio.

The season’s first edition will bring music, themed food and cocktails to the museum’s fifth floor starting at 5 p.m. Thursday. Babylon Burning will give out screen-printed tote bags for 90 minutes once doors open.

Museum employees said hosting the series — which will stage an additional show in July and an unconfirmed date later this summer — will bring a new sense of excitement to the Third Street corridor, while also allowing guests to explore SFMOMA’s galleries in a special atmosphere.

“Rooftop Radio brings together audiences and performers who love art, music and food, and allows audiences to experience different art forms together in one venue,” said Oceane Qiu, a program manager at SFMOMA.

Employees are organizing Thursday’s concert with help from the Villa Albertine, the French Institute for Culture and Education. Serving as the cultural arm of the French Embassy in the U.S., the institute uses art and other projects to promote French culture throughout the globe.
