It's nice to see that space resuscitated after a six year hiatus. It'll brighten up the block.

The interior of Flour + Water Pizzeria in North Beach.

A new pizza shop in North Beach is slinging unusual pizzas like a riff on a classic Roman pasta and another dotted with spicy chile crisp.

From the team behind one of the Bay Area’s best Italian restaurants, Flour + Water Pizzeria opened at the end of June in the former Rose Pistola space on Columbus Avenue, after its first location in the Mission District closed last year. This week, the team started lunch service with the same menu as dinner.

Located near Washington Square Park, the sprawling 4,000-square-foot space has a full dining and bar area, along with a glassed-in “dough room,” so you can watch the team prep and ferment the dough while you eat. The restaurant is bright, modern and airy, complete with pendant lights on walls made out of corrugated cardboard as a nod to retro pizza culture. There’s also a pizza shop with a vintage arcade game machine and a separate entrance on Stockton Street for those looking to grab pizzas to-go. This week, the pizza shop will scrap its foldable thin-crust “Big Slice” and introduce a thicker, Sicilian-esque square slice.
