OK, I couldn't resist. I saw the Stones in 1984 at Candlestick. And Barbara Ockel, our docent at next Wednesday's Shipyard Trust adventure, was at Levi Stadium last night with the Stones.

Mick Jagger is staying up-to-date with the latest headlines in the Chronicle.

At the Rolling Stones’ “Hackney Diamonds” tour stop at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Wednesday, July 17, he demonstrated his impressive knowledge of Bay Area news. In one breath, Jagger touched on several local hot topics: traffic, robotaxis, airplane malfunctions and rampant crime.

“It’s quite a hard place to get to sometimes, isn’t it?” the svelte 80-year-old singer quipped, referring to the notorious backups around the stadium. “I booked a Waymo to come here, but it got hit by an aircraft wheel, and then someone slashed the tires.”

The electric two-hour show, featuring a career-spanning set, marked the 10th anniversary of Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers. Jagger acknowledged the milestone to the ecstatic crowd of approximately 50,000 and added, “Next year, I’m looking forward to you guys winning the Super Bowl!”

Since opening on July 17, 2014, the venue has hosted hundreds of sporting events, including a Super Bowl and two NFC Championship games, as well as concerts by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, U2, Ed Sheeran and, of course, the Rolling Stones in 2019. That year the British music icons performed well past the curfew.

This time, they finished up just before Levi’s Stadium’s 11 p.m. curfew.
