San Francisco will see several street closures and public transit delays Sunday as tens of thousands of runners participate in the city’s annual marathon.

The 26.2 mile San Francisco Marathon will loop around much of the city’s northern half starting at 5:15 a.m., affecting access along the route in the morning and early afternoon. About 31,000 people have registered for weekend marathon activities, organizers said.

Sixteen bus lines will be rerouted during the big race on Sunday and another 12 crossing the course are expected to face delays. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority warned that reroutes and affected stops are “complicated.”

The full list of closures can be found on the San Francisco Marathon’s website and the full list of affected Muni lines can be found here. Transit riders on affected lines may also contact 311 for alternate stop information.

Runners on Sunday will make their way through Fisherman’s Wharf from the Ferry Building, to the Presidio and across the Golden Gate Bridge before crossing the Richmond District into Golden Gate Park.

Participants, who have a six-hour time limit, will then head back east through the park and Haight Street, crossing the Mission District and Potrero, then north along the shoreline back to the Embarcadero.

Cross traffic will be allowed intermittently along 26th and 27th avenues, 16th Street, and parts of Haight Street near Market Street but significant delays are expected.

Race organizers recommend that Richmond District residents west of 27th Avenue use the Great Highway to Lincoln Way, and to use Highway 280 or Highway 101 to cross the path in the Mission District whenever possible. There will also be a detour route for the Third Street section.

Highway 280, Highway 101, Kezar Drive, northbound Crossover Drive, and Park Presidio Boulevard will remain open to vehicular traffic.

A couple of smaller races will occur on Saturday largely in the Presidio.
