The Presidio Trust has overseen extensive changes to one of San Francisco’s most scenic and historic parklands in the federal agency’s nearly 30 years of existence.

Congress created the Presidio Trust in 1996, tasking it with spearheading the preservation and enhancement of the former U.S. Army base. President Donald Trump late Wednesday issued an executive order directing that “the non-statutory components and functions” of the Presidio Trust and three other federally funded boards be eliminated to the fullest extent allowed by law as part of his effort to clean out what he perceives as “unnecessary” parts of the government.

City leaders slammed the order in virtually unanimous fashion. In a statement, Presidio Trust officials maintained that they are confident “our activities are all statutorily based.”

In the almost 30 years since its founding, the Presidio Trust has developed the hilly, 1,500-acre park on The City’s northern tip. Five of the Trust’s projects serve as milestones in its evolution from a military base to a popular destination for residents and tourists alike.
