Sometimes it’s the small things that make the biggest difference in the life of a city. The big things made San Francisco famous: the Golden Gate, the cable cars, the city’s style. And the problems: homelessness, drugs, crime, the decline of downtown.
We forget sometimes that San Francisco is a city of neighborhoods, each of them distinct but all connected by streets big and small.
There’s always a crisis it seems, on Market Street, Valencia Street or the Great Highway, but things were quiet the other morning on Esmeralda Street, on the side of Bernal Heights. It was a once-a-month workday on one of those small projects that makes a difference.
